An Ibadan-based football supporter, Suara Moshood Onisemeje, has softened his stance against Shooting Stars Sports Club following the controversy surrounding alleged political activities during the club’s Matchday 37 fixture against Barau FC at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
Moshood had earlier petitioned the Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA, accusing the club’s management of allowing political mobilisation and campaign activities linked to governorship hopeful, Bimbo Adekanmbi, during the league match played on May 10, 2026.
The petition alleged that the stadium was used for political messaging and mobilisation, contrary to FIFA and NFF regulations prohibiting political interference and displays during football events.
However, in a fresh statement released on Monday, Moshood said although he still disagreed with the use of the stadium and the football club for political purposes, he had decided to “shelve his swords” in the interest of sportsmanship and the state.
He insisted that state institutions such as Shooting Stars should not be used as tools for political mobilisation or image laundering for any governorship candidate, regardless of personal affection for the club.
According to him, public office holders should see the promotion of state-owned institutions as part of their responsibilities rather than acts deserving special praise.
“Football gives everyone leverage and equity without bias, so bringing a political candidate into the stadium when an official match is scheduled should not be taken with kid gloves,” he said.
Moshood argued that the actions of any governorship candidate around a football club would naturally attract political interpretations, which could expose the club to sanctions or reputational damage.
He also warned the management of 3SC against assuming that being a state-owned club gave room for political usage of the team or stadium facilities.
“The management of the club should not be carried away with self-entitlement or saying it is a state team and can be used to promote the sitting governor or governorship candidate,” he added.
