The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olagunju Ojo, has urged the executive arm of government to take proactive action against self medication.
Ojo spoke on Tuesday on the floor of the House while reacting to a motion on sensitising the public to avoid self medication and drug abuse.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the motion was sponsored by Hon. Gbenga Oyekola representing Atiba State Constituency.
The House, in its resolution, urged the executive through the Ministry of Health to sensitise youths on the need to refrain from self medication and usage of drugs such as tramadol and codein.
It also advised health institutions in the state to be cautious in prescribing tramadol, codeine and other drugs to patients.
The House noted that accessibility to medical service was not sometimes available, forcing people to seek alternative avenues.
“Medical personnel are advised to closely monitor patients using drugs, and consider the pros and cons of the use of tramadol and analgesic with a view to determining its usability.
“We have a lot of youths engaging in crime and criminal activities these days, I discovered that most of them are actively under the influence of drugs.
“Tramadol is the most important which the youths take in excess and use the opportunity to commit crime like rape and armed robbery,’’ Oyekola had said.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Education Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2017 has been passed into law.
The bill was presented by Hon. Olukayode Akande representing Ogbomoso South State Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Education.
The assembly adjourned sitting till Thursday.
