As tenure of local government caretaker chairmen ends tomorrow November 6th, 2017, there are moves by politicians, especially members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to curry the favour of Governor Abiola Ajimobi and those who have his ears, so as to be considered as acting chairmen.
It is rumoured that a new set of caretaker chairmen may emerge to allow those who have ambition to go plan.
The lobbying became intense following a court order that the state should go ahead with the conduct of election into the existing 33 local government areas.
There are rumours that those who have ambition to chair the various local government areas may not be considered as caretaker chairmen of their various council areas.
Though not confirmed, the LG election may hold in April 2018.
Insideoyo.com gathered that the current chairmen have constituted a powerful team to talk the governor into renewing their tenure so as to be firmly rooted. It is still unsure whether the governor will be okay with the plan.
“They have many fears. Some of them just spent few months in office while some are afraid of losing the primaries. They want to be in the saddle till few months to election,” a source hinted.
Speaking with a top member of the Oyo State House Assembly on the matter, he confirmed that though the governor has not sent any letter to the House for confirmation or otherwise, the governor may likely go for new persons. “But those new persons may not be allowed to contest the forthcoming LG election,” the source said.
Ajimobi had in July renewed their tenure following court order that the planned LG election should be put on hold.
It would be recalled that some tradional chiefs had gone to court to challenge the ceding of their villages to another council in the creation of local council development areas, LCDAs.
As at the time of filing this report, it is still unsure whether the governor will extend their tenure or appoint new persons.
