The Spiritual Head of Shafaudeen in Islam, Prof. Sabit Olagoke, has criticised the proposed voting bill by the Federal House of Representatives, describing it as “the greatest joke of the Century, in the Perfect year 2025.”
He stated this in an interview with newsmen, following the announcement of the bill that would impose a six-month imprisonment or a N100,000 fine for certain voting offenses.
Prof. Olagoke expressed concern over the lack of an accurate census to determine eligible voters, stating, “It is a country where there is general apathy due to little or no impact of government voted for, towards every election.”
He highlighted the disconnect between voters and elected officials, adding, “The dividends of Democracy in Nigeria are aggravated Poverty, Insecurity, Institution Indiscipline, and Endemic Corruption.”
The Islamic cleric warned that enforcement of the bill would infringe on fundamental human rights, asserting, “The success of the bill will only amount to deliberate persecution and coercion if the government continues to fail to dish out benefits of good governance.”
In another development, Prof. Olagoke praised the JAMB registrar, Prof. Isiaq Oloyede, for accepting responsibility following the glitches that occurred in the last JAMB examination.
He commended Oloyede’s transparency in addressing the issues, stating, “It takes a compassionate leader to acknowledge shortcomings and respond effectively to the concerns of stakeholders.”
Prof. Olagoke noted that Oloyede’s willingness to address the problems head-on demonstrated a commitment to accountability.
“His approach to the situation reflects a genuine concern for the students affected by the examination irregularities,” he said.
Olagoke emphasised that such leadership qualities are essential for fostering trust and improving the educational system in Nigeria.
He further urged other leaders to emulate Oloyede’s example, asserting, “A timely acknowledgment of issues, followed by actionable solutions, can greatly enhance public confidence in our institutions.”
