Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogbomoso have dismissed recent defections by some party members, describing the development as inconsequential to the strength and stability of the party.
The party leaders were reacting to the exit of the PDP House of Representatives candidate for the 2023 election, Hon. Olufemi Onireti, alongside a former Surulere Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sharafadeen Olatunji-Mohammed, who reportedly left the party last week.
Addressing journalists, the stakeholders maintained that those who defected did so for personal reasons, stressing that their departure does not in any way weaken the PDP’s structure in Ogbomoso.
“They left on their own accord, and it is nothing to worry about. The PDP in Ogbomoso remains strong and united,” the stakeholders stated.
They further claimed that about 95 percent of members considered as followers of the defectors have remained within the party, demonstrating continued confidence in the PDP’s leadership and direction.
Citing Osupa Ward 9 where Hon Onireti left as an example, the stakeholders explained that only the party’s vice chairman defected alongside Hon. Onireti, while other executive members in the ward structure have stayed back.
“All other ward executives remain intact and continue to carry out their responsibilities. This clearly shows that the party structure is solid and unaffected,” they added.
The stakeholders also stressed that there is no division within the Ogbomoso PDP, noting that the party remains united and firmly aligned behind Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, whom they praised for what they described as unprecedented achievements and transformation across the state.
They added that the party continues to gain strength, revealing that several members of opposition parties, alongside new entrants, have recently joined the PDP. According to them, the new members will be formally received at an official event to be announced in due course.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the PDP ahead of future elections, urging members to remain focused and united.
They also called on party faithful not to be distracted by the recent defections, insisting that the PDP remains the preferred platform for the people of Ogbomoso.
