The Palace of the First Crowned King of Egbeda in Oyo State has announced the immediate suspension of all celebratory activities originally scheduled for the 84th Posthumous Birthday Anniversary of the late Oba Victor Sunday Olatunde Aremu Okunola (JP), Oosagade I.
According to an official palace statement signed by Prince Eric Okunola (JP), the decision was enacted as a mark of respect following the recent passing of a prominent matriarch within the royal family.
The suspension alters plans for the upcoming milestone on September 27, 2026, which was set to honor the enduring legacy of the traditional ruler.
Oba Okunola, a revered patriarch in the town, passed away earlier this year on May 14, 2024.
In place of the scheduled public festivities, the palace grounds will now observe a designated period of solemn reflection to honor both the late monarch and the memory of the departed matriarch.
Palace officials expressed profound gratitude to the public and the local community for their understanding and steadfast support during this period of transition.
The royal family emphasised that the pause on public events is vital to preserving the dignity of the family’s recent loss, urging subjects to join them in quiet remembrance.
The palace confirmed that the administrative focus will shift toward organising a comprehensive tribute next year.
A major double celebration is currently projected for September 27, 2027, to mark the late monarch’s 85th Birthday Anniversary. Royal organisers stated that the future event will serve as a definitive commemoration of the patriarch’s historical impact on the Egbeda kingdom.
