The Oyo State lawmaker representing Ibadan Constituency II, Hon. Adebayo Babajide has launched an education and safety support programme as he distributed over 10,000 exercise books and sanitary protection pads to indigent students in his constituency.
The gesture of the lawmaker was part of his ‘Educate-A-Child Project’ which is aimed at complementing the educational policy of the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.
While speaking with newsmen yesterday after the event, Babajide said the exercise books were his own way of supporting parents and reducing the educational burden.
According to him, the distribution of the exercise books is the first phase of his ‘Educate A Child Project’ meant for Students of Ibadan North State Constituency II while there are other educational support programmes to be implemented such as scholarship for indigents in the constituency.
He said, “Without doubt, quality education across levels is the most assured solution to our many problems in this country. That’s why we have to contribute our own quota to the free education policy of the PDP administration in Oyo State, led my our amiable Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.
“What I am doing today is to consolidate the efforts of the State government and also a medium to assure my people in this Ibadan constituency II of my resolution to continue to embark on programs and projects that will have direct bearing on lives.”
Alongside the distribution of exercise books, Babajide also shared sanitary pads to indigent school girls to commemorate the 2019 International Girls Child Day.
“As a lawmaker, I noticed many underprivileged girls from the age of fourteen (14) face a lot of difficulties in affording sanitary pads, as parents focus more on food provision.
“Some of them don’t even go to school once having menstrual period; as they resolve to using pieces of abandoned wrappers in place of sanitary pads, which expose them to health hazard like fungal infections, urinary tract infections, reproduction tract infections and even cervical cancer.
“My initiative is to support girl child education and her safety, and also as an advocacy move to call on government, private sector and well-meaning individuals to support girl child education, safety and empowerment in Oyo State.
“Today, we have visited St. Thomas Primary school 1,2 and 3, Olive Primary School 1&2, Abadina Primary School, Abadina College, United Secondary School, Immanuel College High School, St Louis Grammar Schools,New Eden Primary school, Oba Akinbiyibi high school, Methodist Primary School,” he added.
