The wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, has charged young girls to rise with confidence and lead positive change in their communities, as Oyo State joined the global commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child held at the Civic Centre, Ibadan.
This year’s celebration had the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”
In her address, Mrs. Makinde reminded the girls that every child carries a story and background that should inspire strength, not limitation. She said girls must learn to see themselves as capable leaders, not followers, and to recognize that challenges are part of the journey to success.
“Our children are not weak. You are not followers, but leaders, Every girl has the right to dream big. The challenges you face do not define you. They are stepping stones, not stumbling blocks. Become the change you want to see and never underestimate the power of speaking up. No dream is too far to reach.” she said
She urged the girls to believe in their abilities and to hold firm to their dreams, describing them as unstoppable when driven by purpose.
The First Lady also appealed to teachers to speak encouragingly to their students, noting that words of affirmation can nurture confidence and growth.
In his welcome remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Olusegun Olayiwola, described the day as “a vision of hope and strength” that reminds society that girls are not victims of challenges but survivors who continue to strive and excel in classrooms, communities, and even online spaces despite difficult circumstances.
“Our girls remain embodiments of strength, persistence, and great value,They stand on the frontlines of crisis and disappointment, yet continue to overcome.”Olayiwola said.
He commended Mrs. Makinde for her continued commitment to programmes that transform the lives of girls and women in Oyo State, urging the young participants to be proud of their dreams, identities, and journeys.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, broke down the theme, encouraging girls to discover themselves, show zeal in all they do, and make a difference wherever they find themselves. She also advised them to guard against child trafficking and early marriage, while prioritizing education as a pathway to a better future.
A panel session highlighted the event, where participants were urged to communicate openly with their parents, study diligently, and learn digital skills to prepare for the opportunities of a modern world.
Six outstanding students who excelled in the last WAEC examination received laptop computers as awards for academic excellence.
