The Association of Igbo Residents in Oyo and supporters of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Saturday accused former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of attempting to destabilise Oyo State through what they described as provocative political statements and interference in the state’s affairs.
At a press conference held on Saturday, in Ibadan on April 18, 2026, and read by Barr. Ndo Ofurunna, the group said it was alarmed by recent developments, warning that such actions could threaten the peace currently being enjoyed in the state.
The association, which declared its support for Governor Makinde’s administration, described it as “a government that has continued to demonstrate purposeful leadership, inclusiveness, and genuine commitment to development.”
It, however, took a swipe at Fayose, accusing him of meddling in the politics of Oyo State despite having no constitutional responsibility in the state.
“We have watched with concern the recent comments and activities allegedly linked to former Ayo Fayose, which appear designed to create unnecessary tension in Oyo State and distract the present administration from its developmental agenda,” the group said.
“It is deeply unfortunate that an individual with no constitutional responsibility in Oyo State has chosen to interfere in matters that do not concern him, while attempting to import political quarrels from outside the state into our peaceful environment.”
The group also alleged that Fayose was working in alliance with some political actors to destabilise the state and undermine Governor Makinde, particularly through controversies surrounding the Olubadan traditional institution.
“We are particularly disturbed by allegations that he is working in alliance with Nyesom Wike and others to destabilise Oyo State and undermine Governor Makinde through controversies surrounding the revered Olubadan Stool,” the statement read.
Describing the Olubadan institution as sacrosanct, the association warned against politicising traditional structures, insisting that such actions were capable of undermining peace and cultural identity.
“Let it be made clear that the Olubadan institution is sacred, respected, and central to the identity of Ibadanland. It must never be dragged into partisan politics or used as a tool for selfish ambitions,” it said.
The group further criticised Fayose’s alleged comments on Governor Makinde’s succession plans and leadership style, insisting that political succession processes are clearly defined by law.
The association also rejected alleged claims suggesting an impeachment plot against the governor, describing them as baseless distractions.
“The alleged impeachment plot against our performing Governor in Oyo State is a distraction and unholy wish,” it said, while insisting that Makinde had “earned the confidence of the people of Oyo State through visible projects, transparent leadership, and people-oriented governance.”
Reeling out the administration’s achievements, the group said the state had witnessed progress across key sectors.
It also commended what it described as relative peace in the state, adding that “under Governor Makinde, Oyo State has also enjoyed relative peace, religious harmony, and ethnic inclusion, making the state a model of coexistence for all Nigerians.”
Calling for restraint, the association urged residents not to be swayed by political distractions.
“We urge all citizens of Oyo State to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on the bigger picture of development, refusing to be distracted by noise, propaganda, or politically motivated rumours,” it said.
The group also called on PDP leaders to caution members making inflammatory statements, warning that such utterances could “deepen internal tensions and weaken the party ahead of future political engagements.”
Reaffirming its stance, the association declared full support for Governor Makinde.
“In conclusion, we reaffirm our unwavering support for Governor Seyi Makinde and his administration. We stand for peace, unity, and progress. Oyo State belongs to its people, and no amount of political mischief will derail the journey toward greater prosperity,” it said.
