In recent times, the political landscape in Ibadan North Federal Constituency has been abuzz with activities as all political parties go back to the drawing board to strategize and present credible candidates for the forthcoming bye-election.
This election is to fill the House of Representatives seat left vacant by the late Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi Jagaban, an APC member who represented the constituency until his untimely demise.
Amid these preparations, rumors have been circulating that His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, has endorsed a PDP candidate for the upcoming election. It is important to set the record straight: Governor Seyi Makinde has not anointed any candidate for this bye-election.
As a party committed to democratic principles, the PDP is yet to decide on its candidate for this crucial election.
Speculation has been rife about potential candidates within the PDP who might vie for the seat. Notable among those considered are:
Hon. Lanre Sarumi – The PDP candidate for Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election. He believes his significant investment in the previous campaign makes him a strong contender.
Hon. Abiodun Awoleye – Chairman of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, who lost in the primaries but remains a potential candidate.
Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade – The executive chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, who, despite being seen as a credible candidate, may choose to focus on his current role due to the ongoing local government autonomy reforms.
Hon. Oyekunle Folajimi (Don) – Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Makinde, also viewed as a strong contender.
Hon. Adebayo Babajide Gabriel – A distinguished member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ibadan North Constituency 2. Hon. Gabriel is recognized for his effective representation in the 9th Assembly, which earned him the trust and votes of his constituents to continue his service. His track record of dedication and performance makes him a quality candidate for the federal seat.
Hon. Adeniyi Kazim Bibire – Former Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters. Hon. Bibire is highly esteemed for his accessibility, loyalty to the party, and impactful service.
During his appointment as special adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on local government and chieftaincy matters, his contributions were felt across the federal constituency, and he has been consistently available to assist when called upon.
His unique characteristic of extending fellowship and upliftment to others has endeared him to many in Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
Many believe he can carry on the legacy of the late Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi Jagaban due to his compassionate nature and zeal for development.
Hon. Olufunke Comforter – House of Assembly member representing Ibadan North Constituency 1, known for her commitment to her constituency.
Hon. Toyin Balogun – Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, another potential candidate from the constituency.
Hon. Taiwo Salami – Although his name has come up in discussions, many view him as not having been sufficiently participatory in party activities.
He is often seen around only when opportunities to occupy a position arise, which has led some to see him as more of an opportunist than a dedicated party member.
While all these individuals are qualified and capable of representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, it must be emphasized that, as of now, no candidate has been endorsed by Governor Makinde.
The PDP remains committed to a transparent and democratic process in selecting its candidate for the bye-election.
The people of Ibadan North Federal Constituency should be assured that the party will field the most suitable candidate for the bye-election.
Until then, any news of an endorsed candidate by the governor is purely speculative and should be regarded as such.
