As Africa hosts Climate Week, more than 300 school children under the Climate Justice Ambassadors gathered in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, to build capacity Climate Change, Waste Management and Renewable Energy.
The event, 2109 Youth Conference On Environment, with a theme ‘Climate Change: The Challenges and Possible Solutions,’ was organised by World Ecological Concepts Ltd, supported by Ilaji Resort, Plant For the Planet Academy and Young Volunteers for the Environment and other stakeholders on Saturday, March 16, 2019.
In his welcome address, Prince Olawuyi Seyi, CEO of World Ecological Concepts Ltd an Program Coordinator of the Planet For Planet Academy Nigeria, harped on the need to educate the populace on the impact of climate change in the society starting with young people.
“As the children around the world protest on climate change and issues, we decided to engage professionals, stakeholders and government on these pertinent issues.”
“We need to educate them on climate issues, renewable energy and the essence of tree planting in the society.
Prince said the event is in preparation of the Africa Climate Week event which kicked off in Ghana next week.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Environment who was represented lauded the initiative of the organisation, saying climate action is needed to reduce the effect of economic disasters in the state and the world.
“On this, the Oyo state ministry of the environment has created a specialised unit to tackle climate issues in the state.”
The Commissioner appreciates the organisers for the invitation as there is no better time than now to take action on environmental monsters threatening human existence.
He urged participants on active participation on key issues of climate change in their areas.
The event also witnessed a presentation on how to turn waste to wealth by Taiwo Adewole, an environmental expert and principal officer at the Taiwo Adewole & Associates and Prof. Jimoh Saka from the University of Ibadan. Other guests at the event include CEO of Ashdam Solar limited, Chief Engineer Dotun Sanusi, CEO Ilaji farms and resort, a representative from the National Orientation Agency, Oyo state, Climate Justice Ambassadors among others.
