Former coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde said he was expecting the Nigeria’s national team, Super Eagles to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
In an interview with Independent Newspaper, Onigbinde said African teams will have to reconsider their stand going to major tournaments.
He said, “To be candid, I was expecting them to bring the World Cup trophy home and I mean every sense of what I have said. It is all about believing in your abilities and putting the country first while right there on the field.”
“This is where African teams will have to reconsider their stand going to major tournaments. Now, the French team that eventually won the World Cup, how many Africans were there? You are a journalist and you know that as much as I do that they were many of them. If that is the case, what will stop Nigeria from aiming to win the trophy? I said it when they were travelling that I was expecting the trophy home, but it was unfortunate that they failed to live up to that”
Nigeria’s Super Eagles as well as other African teams failed to reach the second round of the tournament.
