A major chieftaincy tussle has erupted in Komu Town, Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, following an urgent petition sent to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde.
The petition, filed by legal practitioner J. A. Adebisi Esq on behalf of Prince Tajudeen Oloyede Jadesola, called for the immediate intervention of the state government to halt the proposed installation of Mr. Ayandele Olaitan Oyebisi Ayanleke Elegbeede as the Onibise of Komu.
The legal protest highlighted serious irregularities surrounding the scheduled coronation set for Friday, September 18, 2026.
According to the petition, following the demise of the late monarch, Oba Thomas Folawuyo Olaore in early 2024, the Ariina Agbosoye Royal Family conducted due process and unanimously selected Prince Tajudeen Oloyede Jadesola to fill the vacant throne on March 28, 2024.
Moreover, it states that the choice was formally communicated to the town’s kingmakers on March 31, 2024, and subsequently reaffirmed during a joint stakeholder meeting on April 3, 2025, which included representatives of the Agbosoye and Folarin royal families, Itesiwaju Local Government officials, and security personnel.
Tensions flared across Komu community when public invitation cards surfaced announcing the coronation of Mr. Ayandele Elegbeede.
Counsel to the petitioner asserts that Mr. Elegbeede has no ancestral or blood connection to any recognized royal ruling house in Komu, directly breaching Komu Native Law and Custom which restricts eligibility exclusively to male lineage within royal families.
Furthermore, the petition charges that Mr. Elegbeede was secretly appointed without any valid nomination meeting held by the royal families. The legal team argued that the appointment of Warrant Chiefs by the Itesiwaju Local Government to bypass traditional channels violates the Chiefs Law, Cap Law of Oyo State 2000.
Prince Jadesola and his family have urged Governor Makinde to immediately suspend and cancel the scheduled September 18 coronation to allow a thorough official investigation into the matter.
The petitioner also
warned that should the state government fail to intervene, the family will promptly institute legal proceedings against all involved stakeholders to uphold traditional customs and protect the rule of law.
Copies of the petition have been served to key officials, including the Attorney General of Oyo State, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, His Imperial Majesty the Alaafin of Oyo, and state security agencies.
