Oba Gbenga Adigun Adeoye Oyetunji Oyinlola II, Aare Alawo Ekun of Ofiki in ATISBO local government area of Oyo state, has cautioned politicians against using the Oke Ogun name for personal gain, emphasizing that the zone’s name is bigger than individual political interests.
The warning comes as the 2027 Oyo State gubernatorial election approaches, with Oke Ogun seeking representation. Notably, Oke Ogun has not produced a state governor since the fourth Republic began in 1999, despite being the second-largest zone in the state, with 10 local government areas.
He made this known in a statement personally signed by him and made available to newsmen, on Tuesday.
Oba Oyinlola II criticized politicians for using emotional slogans without strategic plans, adding that some office holders have failed to make an impact, prioritizing their hometowns over the broader Oke Ogun zone.
The traditional ruler urged politicians to prioritize Oke Ogun’s interests, focusing on specific, business-minded approaches, and forming alliances with other zones.
He also commiserated with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on the loss of his brother, offering condolences and prayers for the family.
The statement read in full: “Don’t mess Oke Ogun name….
“It’s high time politicians should understand that Oke Ogun name is bigger than individuals political interest.
“We have begin to see different flyers and interest groups chanting emotional slogans without strategic plans that can win an election. Sadly, some in the past and even currently in helms of affairs at executive or legislative arms of government do not have an impact. Some are even town oriented political office holders who don’t seem to care about other towns yet claim Oke Ogun indigent.
“Our name “Oke Ogun” is our brand and must not be messed.
“As much as we are clamoring and calling for inclusiveness and recognition of elective positions to our zone in the state we must at the same time keep watch of our actions and inactions of the past that yield nothing.
“Let the political class have Oke Ogun as first in their minds rather than their political parties or interests.
“We cannot achieve anything, if we want everything at the same time. We must be focused, specific and business minded in alliance with allies from other zones of the state.
“On this note , I on behalf of Aare Alawo Ekun of Ofiki in Council commiserate with His Excellency Engnr Seyi Makinde on the death of his brother. May Almighty God console the family and grant you fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Amen”
