As part of the plans commemorating the 16th Annual Aret Adams’ Foundation, four Geology students of University of Ibadan (UI) have been awarded scholarship following their outstanding academic performances.
The students including Olayinka Yinka Ayodeji, Akwaowoh Idongesit Michael, Adeniran Margaret Adenike and Jaiyeoba Oluwabunmi Kikelomo faced rigorous aptitude test by the Foundation Board after being selected from their Department before being adjudged “intellectually sound and smart”, therefore deserving the scholarship.
Aret Adam was the first Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) who retired in 1990, representing the best values and ideals in practice, just as he was principled, incorruptible and patriotic.
His friends set up the Foundation shortly after his death in 1999, keeping his ideals alive through funding of professorial chairs, annual seminars and lectures, building capacity for the development of agriculture and providing educational assistance through scholarships to Master’s students.
Speaking while presenting the scholarship, the Chairman, Board of Trustee, Engineer Charles Osezua disclosed that the scholarship was given to perpetuate the culture of excellence which Aret Adam represented, urging the recipients to continue to aspire towards excellence in all their undertakings.
According to the Chairman, “Aret believed greatly in affordable education, good governance and enduring job creation. These are his legacies which necessitated the establishment of this Foundation ”
Earlier in his own remarks, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka who thanked the Foundation members for the gesture noted that UI was synonymous with the best in every enviable value, hence its thoroughness both in moral and academic tradition.
Other members of the board on the occasion were Foundation Chairman, Mr. Egbert Imomoh, Dr. Layi Fatona and the Secretary to the board, Mr. Akin Jokojeje.
Accompanying the VC were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Kayode Adebowale, DVC (Academic), Prof. Adebola Babatunde Ekanola, DVC, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships (RIPS), Prof. Adenike Adeyemo, the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi and the University’s Librarian, Dr. Helen Komolafe Opadeji among others.
