In a concerted effort to sustain previous investments in malaria programming and intensify the battle against malaria, the Oyo state government through the Ministry of Health held a community outreach and awareness program in commemoration of the World Malaria Day 2024.
The event was held, on Thursday, at the Molete Primary Healthcare Facility, situated in the Ibadan South West Local Government Area of the state.
While speaking, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, spoke on the need to combat malaria.
Ajetunmobi highlighted strides made in malaria control including the reconstitution of the Malaria Technical Working Group (mTWG) and the commitment to fortify the malaria laboratory for precise diagnosis and treatment.
Her words: “Today, as we gather under the theme ‘Accelerating the Fight Against Malaria for a More Equitable World,’ we are reminded of the urgency and collective responsibility we bear in the fight against this formidable disease.
“Our intent is to engage professionals to bring about innovations that would provide solutions to challenges emanating from malaria control.”
She disclosed plans to release counterpart funds for the forthcoming Net campaign and to offer free malaria testing and treatment for all fever cases under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Ajetunmobi also emphasized the necessity of effective coordination and multifaceted approaches in combating malaria. She urged total commitment, investment in innovation, and the translation of commitments into tangible actions for impactful results.
While also speaking, Dr. Muideen Babatunde Olatunji, the Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, stressed the significance of collaborative efforts in achieving a malaria-free society.
He said: “Collaboration among stakeholders is paramount in our quest to eradicate malaria from our communities.”
Present at the event included Dr. Omowumi Moromoke Femi-Akinlosotu, President of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Tayo Akintoye, representing the Presidential Malaria Institute State (PMS-S), and Mrs. Oluwatoyin Afachon, representing Breakthrough Anchor Nigeria, representatives of WHO, ROTARY, Religious leaders among others.
