Forty-One students of University of Ibadan (UI) from various departments were among the 429 students across the country in different universities who won the 2018/19 Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/Total National Merit Scholarship Award.
The students whose names were published in the national dailies were said to have performed creditably at the Scholarship Selection Test conducted on 1 December, 2018 at the various test centers across the country in which millions of Nigerian undergraduate students from all Nigerian universities participated.
Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPN), in pursuance of its Corporate Social Responsibility under the OML130 Asset offers NNPC/TOTAL National Merit Scholarship to undergraduates in all Nigerian universities on a yearly basis.
Participants are drawn from private, state and federal universities with Selection Test being conducted across various centers in the country.
University of Ibadan students however distinguished themselves with many of them from Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Electrical Electronics Engineering, Law and Computer Science featuring prominently on the list of the successful candidates.
Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka who expressed delight with the performance of his students heartily congratulated the students, saying they have showcased the class with which UI has always been known.
According to Prof. Olayinka, “this is a kind of excellent story we always want to hear. We are always delighted when our products excel in their engagements. Our products are our pride. Our primary responsibility here is to groom our students to succeed in life”
“While I congratulate these 41 students who have won this national scholarship award, I urge others to emulate them and shun those who are planning to embark on needless protest over useless issues with a view to prolonging their stay on campus. We are eight months behind academic calendar and we don’t want anything to further disrupt our academic activities “, said the VC.
