The University of Ibadan is set to expel 328 first-year students for “shameful academic performance” in the recently concluded 2016/2017 session, the Vice Chancellor has disclosed.

The VC, Idowu Olayinka, in a statement obtained on Tuesday, blamed the situation on the absence of post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination test before the affected students and others in their set were admitted.

According to Mr Olayinka, the university compiled the list of the affected students following the meeting of the University Senate held on March 19 and 20 to deliberate on the 2016/2017 academic results of the final year and non-final year students.

He said the students did not meet up with the minimum condition approved by the university senate.

One out of every nine of the 100 level students did not meet the minimum condition to retain their studentship.

He said, “It can be observed that students in the science-based disciplines, in particular, did not perform too well, with the pass rate being lowest at 67.5 per cent at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine. On the other hand, the Humanities-based discipline posted better results, with the best coming from the Faculty of Law at 99.2 per cent.”

He blamed “the shameful performance on the failure to conduct the annual post-UTME test for students admitted to the University for the 2016/2017 session.”

He, however, exhibited optimism for a better academic performance since the new intakes for the 2017/2018 session were those who sat for and passed the post-UTME test.
