The House of Representatives yesterday resolved to investigate alleged the negligence by doctors, nurses and other medical staff of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan over the untimely death of a patient, Oluwaseun Eziekel.
The resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion by Hon. Adedapo Lam Adesina (APC, Oyo) on the matter on the floor of the House.
While debating the motion, Adesina noted that medical personnel, particularly doctors, nurses and cardiologists are employed at various medical institutions across the country to give adequate treatment to patients and to heal them of their ailments.
He further noted that the management of various medical institutions were expected to always monitor the general performance of their staff, most especially medical personnel during the course of their duties.
He informed that one Oluwaseun Eziekel was admitted at the University College Hospital UCH Ibadan on March 16, 2018 due to cardiac ailment.
The lawmaker also disclosed that the medical personnel, who attended to the patient during the 19 hours she spent at Emergency Unit of UCH betrayed the ethics of their profession, leading to the death of the innocent young lady.
He added that throughout the 19 hours spent by Oluwaseun Eziekel in the hospital, no Cardiologist attended to her despite the fact that her ailment was cardiac related.
The lawmaker therefore averred that the negligence on the part of many medical personnel in various hospitals across the country had resulted in loss of lives.
According to him, if the unholy trend continues, most people may lose hope in the country’s medical institutions and the result would be devastating on the citizenry.
The House presided by the Speaker Hon. Yakubu Dogara, therefore, resolved to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of the patient.
Dogara further mandated the Ad-hoc Committee to report back to the House in four weeks.
