The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrate Confraternity) has commemorated the June 12 Democracy Day, joining governments, civil society organizations, and community groups in celebrating this significant milestone.
“As a society-focused organization, we consider this year’s Democracy Day as a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s projected development.
“Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted civilian rule is a testament to our country’s resilience and determination to deepen democratic values. We commend the efforts of past and present leaders who have contributed to our democratic journey.” said Olufemi Adesope, Capoon of the National Association of Seadogs.
The association acknowledged the historic June 12, 1993, election, which was annulled, and urged the current administration to align with the principles of fairness, equity, and justice that defined the June 12 struggle.
“June 12 represents the spirit of fairness, equity, and justice. We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize economic prosperity, security, education, and healthcare, and to utilize democracy to eliminate poverty and strife.
“The June 12 struggle was about creating a better Nigeria for all citizens, regardless of ethnic, religious, or socio-economic background. We must continue to work towards achieving this vision.” Adesope emphasized.
The association called on the government to renew its commitment to utilizing democracy as a vehicle for peace, justice, and security, ensuring economic development in every community, local government area, and state.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must not lose sight of the inherent lessons in the June 12 struggle. We must ensure that the failed promises of June 12, such as abrogation of poverty, equity, and justice, are actualized.
“We urge all Nigerians to continue to promote democratic values, hold leaders accountable, and work towards building a united and prosperous Nigeria.” Adesope concluded.
The National Association of Seadogs reiterated its commitment to supporting democratic development and promoting social justice in Nigeria.
