Some workers under the umbrella of All Workers Convergence (AWC) on Tuesday barricaded entrances of the Federal Secretariat located at Ikolaba, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital in protest over the delay in the implementation of the new minimum wage by the Federal Government.
The workers while protesting, locked up the secretariat and frowned at what they termed “delay in the implementation of the new minimum wage” by the Federal Government.
The protesting workers prevented workers and visitors from entering the premises to carry out the day’s businesses.
National Coordinator of AWC, Comrade Andrew Emelieze, while addressing journalists, said the protest was to address the insensitivity of the Federal Government as regards agreeing to and implementing the new minimum wage.
Emelieze who accused the government of making workers wait endlessly for the implementation of the promise it made in 2017, said workers are set to embark on an indefinite strike should nothing be done on the matter by September 30.
He said, “The N66,500 that we are demanding is not even up to one per cent of President Muhammadu Buhari’s salary, and they are saying they cannot give us.
“We know how much the senators are collecting, which is N14 million per month and they are giving us N18,000 per month as minimum wage.
Emelieze said that federal workers in the state were setting the pace by embarking on the protest and urged all workers throughout the federation to rise up and protest against what he described as “injustice”.
