The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), Oyo State recently met with National Orientation Agency (NOA), a body tasked with communicating government policy, staying abreast of public opinion, promoting patriotism, national unity, and development of Nigerian society.
The meeting had in attendance, NANS leadership led by its Chairman, Asubiojo, Olujuwon Marshal, Comrade Ajibade Akeem, Treasurer of the association, SUG President of OYSCTECH, Students’ Union President of Oyo State College of Health and Technology, Sen. Olawale Umar, Students’ Union President of Federal College of Forestry, Sen. Omotosho Vincent and Comrade Dauda Ridwan Olalekan.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman, Asubiojo Olujuwon emphasized the need for massive leadership orientation targeted at Nigerian youth and students.
“We deem it fit to seek your support to enlighten our members on how to prepare for future leadership roles”, the chairman noted. He stressed further, “this leadership of NANS has been taking steps to clear negative stereotypes about the association, and repositioning to prepare students for the life ahead, outside the walls of tertiary institutions.
He stated that “our institutions are marred with different atrocities like Sex-For-Grade by the lecturers and trampling on rights of students.”
The Director of the Agency while addressing the team registered her unreserved pleasure to receive what she described as “well coordinated and oriented leadership of NANS”.
She affirmed her commitment to protect the interest of Nigerian students and put efforts in place to ensure they are re-oriented to embrace standard practices across the world and that meet global standards.
She gave kudos to the NANS team for their logical marshalling of points which suit twenty-first century ideology. She recapitulated event which had characterised NANS and appreciate the effort to work with NANS leadership.
Also speaking on behalf of the agency, an officer of the NOA, Mr Olatunji noted words of encouragement and gave NANS pat-at-back for her relentless efforts in changing the fixed opinion, quoting him, “I’m tongue-tied that a group of students can come up with something like this, NANS was known for protest which often snowballed into riot, but this leadership do not rely on politician for pecuniary gain”.
He furthered appreciate the body and encouraged them to continue this gentlemanly thinking.
Speaking at the meeting, the Treasurer, Comr. Ajibade Akeeem said “we are very grateful for your parental acceptance, we will like if you can come in from enlightening the students populace to curb suicide, sex for marks, and other illicit behaviours that are rampant in our institutions”.
The Director promised to support the body in sensitising her members and urged NANS to maintain this track and also call on them to embrace unity among her member. She stressed that NANS transition programme is what shows her readiness for future political role. “If youths can not peacefully transit, there is no hope for democratic rest”, he urged NANS to maintain tranquillity.
