Oyo State Government says it is planning to re-award the Idi Ape-Basorun- Akobo Ojurin road to another contractor after the contract was revoked from the initial contractor for his failure to complete the project on scheduled.
The State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Professor Raphael Afonja told BCOS News Crew on Wednesday in Ibadan.
Prof. Afonja said the contractor had been paid 30 per cent of the contract sum upfront and ought to have completed the project since January 2019.
While speaking on Olohunda road project, Professor Afonja said the Olohunda road construction project was not captured in the 2020 budget but expressed hope that it would be included in the supplementary budget or 2021 budget appropriation.
Some of the commuters plying Akobo Ojurin road applauded the Government for terminating the contract from a snail speed contractor while appealing for a speedy completion of the project.
Idi Ape -Basorun-Akobo -Ojurin road
Idi Ape -Basorun-Akobo -Ojurin road is one major road within Ibadan metropolis that is strategically located as it serves as a link to three Local Government Councils in the State; it is the major link that connected Ibadan North East Local Government in Basorun to Lagelu and Akinyele Local Government via Akobo and Olohunda axis.
The over two hundred existing communities between Basorun-Akobo to Olohunda have an average of over five hundred vehicles both for private and commercial purposes that plies the road on daily basis.
The contract for the rehabilitation of this road was awarded in May 2017 at a whopping sum of 7.1 Billion Naira, including the construction of a flyover bridge at General Gas.
The 7.1 kilometer road stretched from Idi Ape to Basorun to Akobo Ojurin and terminated at the end of Army Barracks second gate.
The road which ordinarily should have been completed within 18 months has taken longer than necessary which resulted in the termination of the contract.
