The Chairman of Ogbomoso South Local Government Area of Oyo state, Prince Oyedokun Oyeniyi Timothy, has dismissed the purported suspension of himself and his Vice Chairman by members of the legislative arm, describing it as illegal and politically motivated.
In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, Oyeniyi said he was not surprised by the development, as he had been informed weeks ago of desperate moves by some individuals to undermine his administration.
“The unfolding act of illegality being circulated by certain members of the Legislative Arm of Ogbomoso South Local Government, who purportedly claim to have suspended me and my Vice Chairman, did not come to me as a surprise,” he said.
The Chairman maintained that political alignment and realignment are fundamental democratic rights and not grounds for persecution, noting that Governor Seyi Makinde had realigned his political affiliation without being stripped of his constitutional position.
He accused political opportunists and self-appointed power brokers of working tirelessly to ensure his removal through questionable means, after legitimate avenues failed.
According to him, despite his loyalty to the present government in Oyo State following the departure of his political leader, his commitment is being exploited to perpetrate political injustice against him.
“I swore an oath to serve the residents and indigenes of Ogbomoso South, and that oath remains binding on my conscience. I will not abandon that responsibility because of political intimidation,” he declared.
Oyeniyi stressed that politics must not be allowed to destroy democratic institutions, warning those involved to desist from actions capable of plunging the council into crisis.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I remain the duly elected Executive Chairman of Ogbomoso South Local Government, and my Vice Chairman remains in office. No purported resolution can automatically confer constitutional authority to remove elected officeholders outside due process,” he said.
He added that the mandate of Ogbomoso South belongs to its people and vowed to remain committed to them until the lawful expiration of his tenure.
