As a result of refuse littered along the medians, streets, and roads in Oyo state, the state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has suspended the board of Oyo State Waste Management Authority, OYOWMA, over failure to effectively carry out its waste management responsibility.
Makinde disclosed this on Thursday, during a special program on BCOS TV, noting that the humongous trash on streets and roadsides has become an eyesore to the state government thus, the need for the suspension.
According to the governor, the state government spends N37 million monthly to manage waste contractors and evacuators towards clearing refuse off the street, with the claim that the OYWMA board demanded N46 million before it could carry out tasks that are far lesser than that of the waste contractors and evacuators.
The governor, however, said he has set up an Ad-hoc committee to take over the responsibility of collecting and managing waste generated in the state with the provision of skip bins at specific locations across the state pending the time the board of Oyo State Waste Management Authority, (OYWMA) will correct its wrongs.
Governor Makinde, however, appealed to the Oyo state residents whose action and inaction of the state’s Waste Management Authority (OYWMA) has affected for the past one month to bear with the government and expect changes soonest.
