The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde is a sports loving governor and will ensure all round sports development in the state.
Commissioner of Sports Oyo State, Honourable Seun Fakorede gave the assurance while fielding questions at the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Forum at the ongoing 5th National Youth Games (NYG) ongoing at the University of Ilorin.
“We will encourage all sports. One of the greatest advantage we have in Oyo State is that our Governor is a sportsman he loves tennis, he plays golf. Not just football, we have other sports that are good like football.
“We will see remarkable changes in all games impressively, put forces together to have better sporting facilities,” he said.
He said the governor has expressly stressed that the sports industry and its relationship with youth must be taken seriously.
“His Excellency, Engineer Makinde harping on how to take sports forward,” he added.
Fakorede said that he was impressed by the state’s performance so far at the NYG.
“We have for now 7 gold medals and some silver. What we have done today is better than previous editions.
“We will do things differently to get result. We need to increase welfare packages for our sportsman so they are well motivated.
“The NYG is impressive, but there is more we need to do especially in terms of screening to show only those who are really U-15 participate,” he added.
He was however, optimistic of a better outing in 2020 at the NYG for Oyo State.
“We have 33 LGAs in Oyo, we have lots of skillful men at the grassroots. By God’s grace at the next festival, we would have a lot to celebrate at the NYG.
When asked on pkans the state government has for its league team, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), he said that efforts are being made to make it bounce back to its winning ways.
“3SC was winning in the past because there were measures in place. We have gone back to history and learnt from it and would use such to bounce back.
“We want to increase our local scouting to discover grassroots talents,” he added.
The commissioner who is just 27 years and tipped as the youngest in the country presently, said that the state boasts of several sporting facilities which will be used judiciously.
“For Oyo State, we have adequate facilities, all we need to do is to optimize and deploy right resources to ensure we optimized it.
“If we want to make it better, we should look into structure and system to make it a level playing ground.
