Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan will not be among the football clubs to feature in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when the new season gets underway later this month.
This follows the failure of the Oluyole Warriors to make the cut in the Super 8 Tournament that will be rounded off today in Aba, Abia State.
The Super 8 Tournament is organised for the top eight teams from the abridged Bet9ja Nigeria National League (NNL) to determine the four teams that will gain promotion to the elite NPFL.
At the end of the round robin in the Southern Group, 3SC placed third, having won one match and lost two others. The club lost their last group match against Bendel Insurance of Benin City 0-1 on Wednesday. The solitary goal was scored by Charles Omokaro in the early minutes of the match.
Earlier they had lost 0-3 to Remo Stars and had beaten Delta Force 2-0 who brought up the rear with no point.
Bendel Insurance, after ten years in the wilderness, return to the NPFL after winning all their three matches to garner nine points, followed by Remo Stars who have six points from three matches.
In the Northern Group, Kada City topped the log after three rounds of matches. The Kaduna team amassed five points, same number of points picked by Gombe United. Kada City are better off by their goals difference of +3 to Gombe’s +1.
However, the two teams will play in the NPFL in the new season. Kogi United (four points) and Real Stars are third and fouth respectively in the Northern Group.
To determine the overall champions of the Super 8 Tournament, winners of the Northern Group – Kada City – will face Bendel Insurance, the Southern Group winners today at the Enyimba International Stadium.
