The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, says at least 10, 000 permanent driver’s licences have remained unclaimed since 2015.
Mr Kolawole Akinsinde, Sector Head, Driver’s Licence Centre of the corps, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Thursday that the abandonment of the licences automatically meant that their owners should not be driving on Nigerian roads.
According to him, only drivers with valid driver’s licence and other motor vehicle documents are permitted to drive on the highway.
Akinsinde said that driving without a driver’s licence attract a fine of N10,000 and advised those yet to obtain their permanent driver’s licence to do so promptly.
“The temporary driver’s licence expires in 60 days and within this period the permanent licence is expected to be ready.
“If someone who doesn’t have a drivers licence is involved in a crash and kills somebody, such a person will be charge with an offence of murder, but if such person had a driver’s licence, the charge will be manslaughter.
“You can see the difference; the first one is not bailable while the second is bailable , so it is better for those yet to collect their permanent driver’s licence to do to avoid being arrested and fined,’’ the sector head said.
He urged motorists yet to collect their licences to do so at any of the 10 licence centres in the state using either their temporary licence or identity number whether or not they received an alert.
