Lawmaker representing Oyo North senatorial district, Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari yesterday disbursed cheques for the purchase of 600 West African Examination Council, WAEC, forms for 600 secondary school students in his senatorial district.
Buhari, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, also redeemed his pledge of a bus to the national headquarters of the Federation of Oyo State Student Union, FOSSU.
The event which was held at Ogunlola Hall, Oja Igbo, Ogbomoso had in attendance state, zonal and local executives of the Nigerian Union of Teachers. NUT, Association of Nigeria Conference of Principal of Private Schools, ANCOPPS, and others.
Tagged Senator Buhari Educational Support Scheme, it is in continuation of the lawmaker’s commitment to educational advancement in the country.
Represented at the event by a former Deputy Chief of Staff to former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, Alhaji Abdurasaq Gbadegesin, Buhari said he is poised to invest in the future of the younger generation through education and other activities that will boost their morale in pursuing a worthy future.
In his adress, the state commissioner for Education Professor Joseph Olowefela lauded the Senator for supporting the state government on education saying his gesture is appreciated and acknowledged.
Olowofela who was represented by Ojelade F local inspector of Education in Ogbomoso charged the pupils to be more focused and disciplined as their future is in their hands and “the only way you can have a better future is when you do not allow material things to overwhelm your dream.”
In his brief lecture, an educationist, Mr Moses Ogunniyi, charged parents to always give their children the best of education in preparing them for the future. He said further that “apart from education, parent should strive hard to instill discipline and fear of God in the children as their background and upbringing matters a lot in life.”
Ogunniyi who lamented that most children have no idea of what they want to achieve in future said “student must be ready to be disciplined, and have a goal which they should pursue vigorouly.”
Appreciating the initiator, Abdulyekeen Mariam, who is one of the parents of the beneficiaries said “this education initiative will go a long way in relieving us and help our students to move forward, unlike some politicians who give cutlasses and guns to the youths, Senator Buhari is helping them to secure a better future. One of my sons who benefited from his educational support programme in 2005 when he was a member of the House of Representatives, is now a graduate,” she added.
NUT zonal chairman in Ogbomoso, Comrade Adaramola Sunday described the initiative as an investement that will assist the younger ones in thier future endevour . Sen. Buhari has been doing it before, he has been very suportive; he has built ICT centres for schools in the senatorial district and we appreciate him.”
State ANCOPPS chairman, Mr Aremu Emmanuel, while commending the senator, said “Oyo State is fortunate to have the lawmaker in this present,” praying for his success in his future endeavour.”
