The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved indirect primaries for Saturday, September 29th, 2018 governorship primary elections in Oyo state.
The approval is against Communications minister, Barr. Adebayo Shittu’s stance, who is against indirect primary for the selection of gubernatorial candidate in the state.
A statement issued by the APC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday and cited by InsideOyo.com listed Oyo state among others that will conduct indirect primaries for the Saturday, September 29th, 2018 governorship primary election.
With this, the ruling party appears to have favoured the stance of Governor Abiola Ajimobi and other state governors against some senators and other influential politicians in Adamawa, Kaduna and Imo.
The Minister of Communications had earlier said on radio station in Ibadan that the party at the National level has not decided whether the mode of election will be direct or indirect.
Shittu who also expressed confident on the leadership of the party affirmed that the party will choose direct mode of primary as exhibited in Osun state.
What is direct and indirect primaries?
In an indirect primary, party members elect delegates who choose the party’s candidates at a chosen venue usually in the state capital.
A direct primary is a situation whereby party members who are registered and have their membership card vote across the local government to pick the party’s candidate.
