On this International Youth Day, I celebrate Nigeria’s hopeful generation—the young people who wake up every day believing in the capacity, strength, perseverance, and resilience of our nation.
For generations, young Nigerians have been overlooked, underestimated, and denied opportunities that should naturally belong to their generation. We live in a country where, too often, young people struggle to find their place at the very stage of life where their ideas, energy, creativity, and courage should be shaping the future.
It is even more unfortunate that “Youth” has sometimes become nothing more than a title, detached from the very age and stage of life it is meant to represent. Young people are too often seen by older generations merely as mercenaries, political foot soldiers, or instruments for personal and selfish agendas.
But youth is not a title.
Youth is a phase.
Youth is a period of life.
Youth is a season of opportunity, discovery, growth, and contribution.
And like every phase of life, it does not last forever.
Therefore, we must ask ourselves: Are we creating a society where young people can genuinely thrive while they are young, or are we simply keeping the title while waiting for them to become old enough to be taken seriously?
Nigeria does not need a generation of young people who are merely mobilized when they are needed. We need a generation that is empowered, represented, trusted, educated, equipped, and given the opportunity to lead.
To every young Nigerian: your age is not a limitation. Your youth is not a weakness. It is a season with enormous potential.
May we build a Nigeria where young people are not only celebrated in speeches, but respected in institutions, included in decision-making, supported in enterprise, and given a genuine stake in the future of our nation.
Youth is not a title. It is a phase—and Nigeria must make that phase count.
