The University of Ibadan (UI) has elected Congregation Representatives into its Governing Council through electronic voting.
The e-voting system saw the former National Treasurer of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Ademola Aremu, polling 852 votes, to defeat his challenger and Professor of English Language, Babatunde Omobowale, who polled 752 votes.
In the non-academic staff category, C.T.A Semo wo, who polled 637 votes, defeated Alfred Ilesanmi Jimoh and Akinbola Alao, who polled 261 and 598 votes respectively.
In the polls, total number of accredited voters was 2,564 while 1,624 voted. Before yesterday’s election, the university had testrun the electronic voting platform to accommodate those who otherwise might not have been captured.
Unlike previous elections which automatically disqualified persons not on campus to physically cast their votes, the e-voting allowed those who had travelled out of Ibadan to cast their votes. Saturday Telegraph gathered that the election was coordinated from a control room where electronic voting PIN was sent to accredited voters via email to cast their votes.
