Introduction
Politics is one of the most powerful systems that shape the direction of a nation. It determines how resources are distributed, how laws are enacted, and how justice is administered. Every society is influenced by political decisions whether at the family level, institutional level, or national level.
In Nigeria today, politics determines many issues affecting daily life such as security, employment, education, infrastructure, and national unity. Therefore, politics cannot be ignored by any responsible citizen.
Unfortunately, many Christians view politics as dirty, corrupt, and incompatible with faith. As a result, they distance themselves from political participation. This withdrawal has created a vacuum in leadership and governance.
However, the Bible emphasizes the importance of righteous leadership. Proverbs 29:2 declares: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.”
This article examines the meaning of politics, its presence in different areas of life, and the important roles Christians must play in Nigeria’s political space.
1. Understanding Politics
Definition of Politics
Politics is the process through which decisions are made for a group of people concerning governance, authority, and the distribution of resources.
Politics involves:
Leadership
Governance
Decision making
Negotiation and influence
Allocation of resources
Politics therefore exists wherever people interact and make collective decisions.
2. Politics Within the Family
The family is the smallest unit of society, and political processes exist even within the household.
Family politics refers to the processes through which decisions are made concerning the welfare of the household.
Examples include:
Allocation of family resources
Decision making about children’s education
Conflict resolution among family members
Distribution of responsibilities
Whenever a family decides how to manage finances or responsibilities, a political process is taking place.
3. Politics in the Workplace
Politics is also present in professional environments.
Workplace politics includes:
Competition for leadership roles
Influence in organizational decisions
Formation of alliances
Allocation of responsibilities
When practiced ethically, workplace politics can promote fairness, cooperation, and institutional development. When abused, it can result in manipulation and injustice.
4. Politics in the Church
Many believers assume politics should not exist in churches. However, church administration involves governance, leadership structures, and decision-making processes.
Church politics may involve:
Appointment of leaders
Decision making within committees
Allocation of ministry resources
Planning church programs
Healthy church politics should be guided by:
wisdom
fairness
spiritual maturity
respect for leadership structure
Unhealthy church politics often results in rivalry, selfish ambition, and division, which Scripture warns against.
5. Politics in National Governance
National politics refers to the governance of a country through formal institutions.
In Nigeria, governance operates through three major arms:
Executive
Legislative
Judicial
Political activities also involve:
political parties
elections
policy formulation
public administration
These systems determine critical national issues such as security, economic development, education, infrastructure, and social welfare.
Because these decisions affect everyone, Christians cannot afford to remain indifferent to national politics.
6. What Politics Is Not
Politics is often misunderstood because of unethical practices associated with it.
Politics is not:
corruption
electoral violence
vote buying
political thuggery
ethnic manipulation
religious intolerance
These activities are abuses of politics rather than politics itself.
True politics is about leadership, responsibility, and service to society.
7. Who Is a Christian?
A Christian is a person who believes in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and lives according to His teachings.
Biblical characteristics of a Christian include:
Faith in Christ (John 3:16)
A transformed life (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Love for others
Commitment to righteousness
Obedience to God’s Word
Christians are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matthew 5:13–14), influencing society positively.
8. The Proportion of Christians in Nigeria Politics
Nigeria has a large Christian population, estimated to be around 45–50% of the national population.
However, the number of Christians actively involved in politics remains relatively small.
Many Christians:
avoid political participation
consider politics morally corrupt
focus only on church activities
This limited engagement has reduced the ability of Christians to influence governance and public policy.
9. Biblical Foundations for Christian Political Leadership
The Bible presents many examples of believers who played important roles in governance.
Examples include:
Joseph, who administered Egypt and saved nations during famine.
Daniel, who served faithfully in Babylonian government.
Esther, who used her position to save her people.
Nehemiah, who led the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
These examples demonstrate that God often raises faithful individuals to positions of leadership for the good of society.
10. Why Many Nigerian Churches Resist Political Participation
The Perception that Politics Is Dirty
Many Christians believe politics is corrupt and spiritually dangerous.
Misinterpretation of Church–State Separation
Some believers assume that faith should never interact with governance.
Fear of Church Division
Political discussions may produce disagreement among church members.
Limited Political Education
Many Christians lack knowledge of political systems and governance processes.
Over-Spiritualization of National Issues
Some communities rely only on prayer without civic engagement.
11. Why This Mindset Must Change
Nigeria faces major national challenges including corruption, insecurity, unemployment, and weak institutions.
These problems require ethical leadership and responsible governance.
Christians possess values that are critical for national transformation:
integrity
justice
compassion
accountability
service
If Christians withdraw from governance, these values will not influence national leadership.
12. The Roles of Christians in Nigeria Politics
1. Providing Ethical Leadership
Christians should model integrity, transparency, and accountability.
2. Promoting Justice
Believers should defend fairness and the protection of vulnerable citizens.
3. Fighting Corruption
Christian leaders should promote accountability and responsible management of public resources.
4. Protecting Human Dignity
Christians should defend the rights of the poor and marginalized.
5. Influencing Public Policy
Christians can contribute to policies that support education, healthcare, and economic development.
6. Promoting National Unity
Christian leadership should transcend ethnic and religious divisions.
13. Benefits of Christian Participation in Politics
When Christians participate actively in politics, several benefits may emerge:
reduction in corruption
improvement in governance
promotion of justice and fairness
strengthening of moral values in public life
sustainable national development
14. Ways Christians Can Participate in Politics
Christians can engage politically through:
Responsible voting
Political education
Joining political parties
Contesting elections
Civic advocacy and public engagement
Prayer for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1–2)
Personal Reflection
My personal experience in Nigerian politics has shown that many Christians still struggle with the idea of faith participation in governance.
During my political journey in Oyo State, I observed both encouragement and resistance from different sections of the Christian community. These experiences highlight the need for believers to rethink their approach to national leadership.
Rather than abandoning politics, Christians must engage it with courage, integrity, and a commitment to godly principles.
Conclusion
Politics is a powerful instrument for shaping the future of any nation. It is not inherently evil; rather, it is a system through which leadership and governance are exercised.
When righteous individuals participate in governance, society benefits from justice, integrity, and responsible leadership.
Therefore, Nigerian Christians must rise to their calling as salt and light, actively contributing to the transformation of the nation through ethical and responsible political engagement.
