A two day South West Zone Ayo Traditional Game Championship was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium on Thursday 2nd September and Friday 3rd September 2021.
The competition featured Ayo players from four states including host state Oyo as well as Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states.
They slugged it out in five categories namely – male single, female single, male double, female double and mixed double.
At the end of the two Championship players from Oyo State cleared all the available gold medals in the keenly contested games. Oyo State representative, Johnson Adeoye won gold medal in male singles category.
Another player from the Pacesetter State, Aderonke Lawal won the gold medal in female singles.
In the male doubles category, Aiyedun Seun and Johnson Adeoye won gold medal for Oyo State while another Oyo representatives, Aderonke Lawal and Oyetunde Toyin clinched gold medal in female doubles.
And lastly, the duo of Johnson Adeoye and Aderonke Lawal also from Oyo State carted home gold medal in mixed double.
In an exclusive chat with BCOS Sports Crew of Adewale Tijani and Boluwaji Ogunmola, Oyo State Coach of traditional Ayo game, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju expressed delight at the excellent performance of his players.
Mr Adeyanju, who heaped praises on the state government and officials of the state sports ministry and sports council for providing enabling environments for the players to excel, promised that the players will not rest on their oars.
