Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, Pro-Chancellor, The Technical University, Ibadan, has been reported dead.
The late university don was the former Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos.
News of his demise was broken in a statement signed by the Registrar, The Technical University, Olayinka Balogun, on Sunday.
The statement read in part, “With heavy heart, and submission to the will of God I write to inform Council members of the transition to glory of Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, First Technical University, Ibadan which occurred today, January 3.”
Unconfirmed sources including the UNILAG alumni group Whatsaap platform said the professor died of COVID-19 complications.
The platform read: “With great sadness, we announce the passing unto glory a very distinguished alumnus and a past Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, who died this evening from complications of COVID-19.
“We pray that his soul rests in peace and the Lord comfort his family and all of us he left behind.
The deceased was former President of the Nigeria Academy of Science. He attended Ilesa Grammar School, Ilesa, Osun State and Igbobi College, Lagos from 1962 to 1968 and the University of Lagos from 1968 to 1971.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in the First Class Division by the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1971.
A Master of Mathematics degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering with specialization in Applied Mechanics/Systems in 1976 both form the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
