The Senator representing Oyo Central recently presented two renovated buildings at the maternity centre where she was born.
The maternity centre, Ayarabiyasa, is utilised as a maternity centre by many communities in Oyo East LG and Oyo Town environs.
The refurbishment included the provision of a motorised borehole with overhead storage tank, refurbishment of the bathroom/lavatory facilities and internal decor.
Speaking on the refurbishment, Sunmonu said “The maternity centre is utilised by many communities in the locality and was requested by the community heads and local medical professionals. Now that the structures have been refurbished we are working on securing modern equipment”.
The former Oyo State Speaker further stated that in addition to the maternity centre, she was determined to use her legislative capacity to reduce child mortality in Nigeria in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In her words “Recently the World Health Organisation issued a statement that Nigeria has the third highest child mortality rate in the world with nearly 9% the world’s new born deaths taking place in Nigeria. These figures are not only alarming but disheartening”.
Sunmonu continued “one of the major course of these deaths is lack of facilities and it must be taken seriously”.
Closing her remarks she encouraged women to patronise only qualified medical professionals, especially during pregnancy.
