Indigenes of Ogbomoso in Oyo State have called on the Federal Government to complete the Ogbomoso-Oyo portion of the Ibadan-Ilorin Expressway, saying the old road has become a death trap.
In a separate plea to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, the group appealed that the road be completed by August 1, 2018, threatening that failure to do so would lead to a protest.
The group’s position was expressed during a press conference in the town on Monday where it was stated that completion of the road, which connected the South-West to the northern part of the country, would save the lives of thousands of Nigerians who plied it daily.
Leaders of the group also noted that the road, if completed, would boost economic activities between the two regions.
At the event were traditional leaders, indigenes of the town, security chiefs and other residents of the town.
The head of churches in Ogbomosholand, Dr Isreal Olaniyan, who represented the group, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to fulfil his campaign promise to the people of the town by completing the road project.
He said, “The Ogbomosho-Oyo section of the Ilorin-Ibadan Expressway which spans about 52 kilometres has a history of promises upon promises by successive governments.”
