In commemoration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, First Lady of Oyo state, Engineer Tamunominini Makinde, hosted an inspiring event for children living with disabilities from 15 homes across the state.
The event themed, ‘Celebrating Our Diversity, Empowering Our Future,’ reflected the First Lady’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
Represented by Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, the Head of Service in Oyo State, Engineer Makinde delivered a heartfelt speech, reminding the children that their disabilities do not define them. Instead, she emphasized their abilities and limitless potential.
She also praised the caregivers for their selfless dedication, acknowledging their vital roles in the children’s lives.
Her words: “Our diversity is not just a feature of our nation; it is one of those things that make us unique, capable, and full of potential. Every single one of you here today is a reflection of that diversity, and I am here to remind you that no challenge or obstacle can stand in the way of your greatness.
“To the parents and caregivers, I want to acknowledge your tireless dedication, your endless love, and your incredible efforts in nurturing these wonderful children. You are true heroes, and your role in their lives is invaluable. The road may not always be easy, but know that your commitment makes a profound difference. Thank you all for your labour of love and may God reward you abundantly.
“To all the children here, always remember that you are strong and you are loved. I encourage you to keep dreaming big, keep believing in yourselves, and know that you are capable of achieving anything you set your hearts and minds to. You are not defined by your disabilities but rather, by your abilities, your spirit, and your limitless potential.”
In a show of support, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, donated clothing items and toys through her Renewed Hope Initiative.
Each home received food items, toiletries, clothes, and cash gifts. The event also has medical check ups for the children, caregivers and everyone. Tests were carried out and drugs were administered.
The event brought together children, caregivers, and government officials, including female state commissioners and members of the state House of Assembly.
This celebration embodies the spirit of inclusivity and compassion that defines the Oyo First Lady’s style.
