The Oyo State House of Assembly has charged Southwest Governors to swiftly implement resolutions from the recently held security summit in the region.
This was made known in a statement made available to InsideOyo.com on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the OYHA adopted a motion on Tuesday calling on the Oyo State government and other southwest states to form synergy, and collaborate on tackling kidnapping and banditry within the region.
The motion which was jointly sponsored by three lawmakers- Hon. Mustapha Olawale (Kajola), Hon. Peter Ojedokun (Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North) and Hon. Isiaka Tunde (Oyo East/Oyo West), lamented the cases of kidnapping and ritual killing which is now rampant in Oke Ogun, Ibarapa, Oyo and other parts of the state.
While presiding over by the plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin noted that it was unfortunate many residents of Oyo State and indeed Nigerians are worried because of the spate of kidnapping and ritual killings in the country, and charged security agents to be more proactive in tackling the menace.
“It is high time we tackle the issue of kidnapping headlong as the ugly act seems to be on the increase especially among people identified as foreigners crawling in through our porous borders.
“Heads of various security agencies in Oyo State must work as a synergy in ensuring that perpetrators of kidnapping and ritual killings are not only apprehended but also prosecuted to serve as deterrent to other criminally minded individuals across the state.
“Security agencies in the state must be dutiful. Let them prove to us as people that they can protect our lives, properties and even borders.
“Let them beef up security in every nook and cranny of Oyo State, let them reduce crime, fish out kidnappers and ritual killers so that our people can sleep with their eyes closed,” he added.
The sitting equally recommended the use of various vigilance groups in local government across Oyo state to complement the efforts of security agencies.
While also calling for the full implementation of the Oyo State kidnapping prohibition law of 2016, the Oyo house of assembly made passionate appeal to all sociocultural groups in the state to map out ways of tackling the issues of insecurity in Oyo State.
The lawmaker representing Akinyele constituency I, Hon. Fatokun Ayotunde in his contributions decried the porous nature of the nations borders, and charged government to lighten security in all the borders to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants into the country.
He said, “Let the federal government also give necessary support in terms of logistics, renumerations and ammunitions to the security agencies to enhance their activities.”
