A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Rauf Olaniyan, has described the emergence of Senator Olufemi Lanlehin as the party’s governorship candidate in the 2019 general election as a good decision taken in the overall interest of the people of the state.
Olaniyan said this on Friday, stressing that the process that threw up the former senator was fair and credible. He said: ” There is no cause for concern in the ADC in Oyo State. The process through which Senator Lanlehin emerged was credible and the situation is not worrisome or tense as some people alleged. When you have a system that is geared towards throwing up the best, there has to be a sieving process. At the end of the day, the best would come up and that was exactly what happened.
My position remains the same, irrespective of the emergence of my co-contender, Senator Lanlehin. Only God can make one what he will be. As a strong ADC member, I am ready to give more from what God has blessed me with.”
He, however, stated that judging from the way the present leaders are running the country, the hope of getting it right soon was dicey. He said: “We may not get it right too soon but, eventually, we shall get it right. We are trying to build something on nothing. We can’t bring anything good out of a faulty constitution. We should encourage the elected representatives to amend the constitution.
“To get it right, we should encourage the lawmakers to amend the constitution. We are referring to the 1999 Constitution put together by the military as Nigeria’s constitution; where did we sit down to draft the Constitution? We have been sitting down since 1999 but till date, we are not able to resolve things. It is sad that some people are benefiting from the inadequacies in the constitution.”
Citing pervasive impunity by the federal lawmakers, he said the elected representatives did not see the need to serve the people judiciously because the constituents never called them to question. He asked: “How many of the lawmakers have we recalled for not representing us well?
