In a boost to grassroots economic empowerment, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), has disbursed recapitalization grants to 1,000 women petty traders in Oyo State, reinforcing her commitment to improving the lives of everyday Nigerians.

The event, held at the Office of the First Lady of Oyo State, Agodi, Ibadan, forms part of a nationwide rollout of the Renewed Hope Economic Empowerment Programme, being simultaneously implemented across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Renewed Hope Initiative, launched in August 2024, is designed to directly support petty traders and women-led small businesses, many of whom operate in the informal sector and lack access to formal capital.

Representing the First Lady at the Ibadan disbursement was the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Hon. (Mrs.) Toyin Balogun, who described the programme as “a deliberate and compassionate intervention” that puts people at the heart of national development.

“We are here today for the disbursement of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Cash Grant, facilitated by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu,” Balogun said.

“This is the second time the First Lady is giving out grants to 1,000 traders in Oyo. The first was in August 2024. Today’s programme is not only a demonstration of care and compassion, but also proof of Her Excellency’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of our people.”

Balogun added that the initiative ensures the Federal Government is reaching out directly to individuals and families with practical interventions that bring both immediate relief and long-term impact.

“This cash grant may appear small, but for many households, it will serve as a critical stepping stone, whether to support a small business, pay school fees, cover medical bills, or meet other urgent needs. Regardless of how it is used, the goal is to uplift lives and reignite hope.”

Representing the Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde, Hon. (Dr.) Olufunke Comforter Olajide, a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ibadan North I Constituency, commended Senator Tinubu’s foresight and people-centered vision.

“The Renewed Hope Initiative is touching lives across this nation. It’s not just empowering women, it’s restoring dignity and strengthening families,” she said.

“I commend the First Lady for taking this direct, inclusive approach to economic development.”

The Oyo State Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Fausat Sanni, praised the growing synergy between the federal and state governments, calling for continued collaboration to drive inclusive prosperity.

“These women are not just traders; they are economic drivers, caregivers, and community builders. Supporting them supports the whole society,” she said.

“I implore all the beneficiaries to make judicious and productive use of these funds. Let it grow into something greater that sustains your families and communities.”

Several beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to Nigeria’s First Lady and the facilitators of the programme.

Mrs. Oyegoke Bose, one of the recipients, said: “We appreciate the First Lady of Nigeria for this kind gesture and for deeming us worthy of this opportunity. We also thank the First Lady of Oyo State for making sure this programme came to us here.

“God bless Mama Oluremi Tinubu for remembering us. This is not just money, it is hope. I will use it wisely, and I pray others are also lifted.”

Mrs. Akinbola Sekinat, another trader, shared her excitement: “We are grateful to our mamas. We will use this money wisely and invest it meaningfully. This is a great support, and I believe it will help grow my small food business.”
