Security has been beefed up at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following recent violence at the state-owned institution which led to its closure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that long queues were on Tuesday sighted at the entrance of the institution while staff and students were told to produce their identity cards before entering the premises.

Alhaji Soladoye Adewole, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, who spoke on the development, confirmed that new security measures had been put in place.

“It is not only students that gain access into the school with Identity cards, it also includes staff as well. This is to ensure sanity and protection of staff and students.

“There is no student who does not have a means of identification, either the institution’s ID card or Faculty/Departmental ID card.

“The management did this to ensure that only bonafide students are on campus.

“It has also tightened security to forestall activities of hoodlums causing chaos in the institution,” he said.

Some of the students while speaking with NAN expressed mixed feelings over the new security measures introduced by the school’s management.

A student in the Department of Computer Engineering said the school’s management should do something about the volatile system, adding that those promoting violence were known.

“The situation is really key bad, we have paid for identity card but we freshers are yet to be given and they are requesting ID card to enter the school.

“The second thing is that the management knows the people causing trouble; a girl was denied access into the school now because she could not provide ID card, this is getting out of hand and something needs to be done because not every student has been issued ID card,” he said.

Another student , who is in the Department of Accounting and who simply identified herself as Olukorede, praised the efforts of the school management for the security measures taken.

“To enter the school you must provide school identity card or you show your school fees receipt or any other document like course form which has your passport photograph.

“This started since last week after the parents and teachers meeting held to find solution to incessant violence in the school.

“This is good because it will prevent people from outside entering the school since they know that there are check points,” she said.

Olanrewaju Hussein, an ND I student in the Department of Quantity Surveying, commended the institution for ensuring that everybody was identified before gaining entrance into the school.
