The Oyo state House of Assembly has appealed to the Oyo state Government to urgently put measures in place for early detection of Lassa fever and treatment of same in case of any outbreak.
The House made the appeal while deliberating on a matter of urgent public importance on the need to prevent the outbreak of the disease in the state brought before it by Hon Ridwan Saminu (Saki East/ Atisbo.
It was noted that with the current increase in the new confirmed cases of Lassafever and death occasioned by the disease in Nigeria, there is the need for the Oyo state Ministry of Health, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other stakeholders to intensify campaign on the risk of getting infected.
The Speaker Oyo state House of Assembly, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin stressed the vital essence of adequate and proper sensitization of members of the public on the need to prevent the deadly disease by keeping their environment neat and free of rats and other rodents already identified as the causative agents.
While highlighting the nineteen states with confirmed cases of Lassafever, the House warned that the
proximity of Ondo,Osun and Ogun states to Oyo state should be a wake up call for all stakeholders on health in the state to prepare for any eventuality.
The motion further charged the Ministry of Local Government to put measures in place for Environmental Health Departments in Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas to ensure fumigation of drainages and gutters in their domains.
