The 2024 International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated in Oyo State with an inspiring event hosted by Her Excellency, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, wife of the state governor.
The event, held at the House of Chiefs, Oyo Assembly Secretariat, brought together 660 female secondary school students from across the state’s 33 local government areas. The theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” aimed to motivate the girls to envision and pursue their dreams.
Speaking at the event, Engr. Makinde encouraged the students to write down their aspirations, using them as reminders to drive success. She also reminded them that their backgrounds should not limit them, but rather fuel their determination to succeed.
Mrs Makinde further said present administration in the state will continue to fund all inclusive education for a progressive, calling for cooperation of all stakeholders in the education sector including the parents, guardians, and students.
The state Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, was among the notable guests in attendance, demonstrating the state’s commitment to supporting girls’ empowerment.
In her goodwill message, a member of Oyo State House of Assembly, representing Ogbomosho North State Constituency, Honourable Oluranti Olubisi-Michael, said the Assembly will consistently make bills that will protect and prioritize rights, values and dignity of girl children towards future positive contributions to Oyo State, Nigeria and the entire world.
Earlier in her lecture, Mrs Celestina Adedian, from the Ministry of Women Affairs and social inclusion, called every girl child to set goals and be well educated for dream actualization.
To recognize academic excellence, six laptops were presented to top-performing female students from government-owned schools, with three awards given for each of the 2023 and 2024 WAEC results. Additionally, all attendees received goody bags containing essential female hygiene products.
This event aligns with the global focus on promoting girls’ rights and addressing the challenges they face. By investing in girls’ education and empowerment.
