The Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government Area, Mr Sahib Oladayo popularly known as Agba Egbe has narrated his ordeal in the hands of officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Recall that insideoyo.com had earlier reported that the council boss was allegedly assaulted by the immigration officers.
Teargas, bullets were let out with some people sustaining injuries in the clash involving some immigration officers and the local government Chairman accompanied by some of his aides and supporters.
Showing bruised legs and hands on Thursday, Oladayo said he was about to leave the Immigration office, Agodi, when he heard a loud shout from the officers asking him and his order aides to hurriedly leave where he stood.
Oladayo said the Immigration officials were already beating some of his boys and while he inquired to know why they were being attacked, he was also attacked.
This was followed by another incident where tyres of vehicles of the Immigration officials, parked beside the local government secretariat, were deflated by supporters of the Chairman aggrieved by the earlier incident.
Oladayo said he already mandated vulcanisers to inflate the tyres so as to free the cars when two officers came towards him and directly shot teargas at him.
Various sources said Oladayo may have come under attack from the immigration officials for standing on the military quarter guard or a restricted area.
In a related development, Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State have asked all immigration officers across the 33 local councils in the state to vacate.
Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo State chapter, Mr Sikiru Sanda made this call in the wake of a clash involving officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Chairman, Ibadan North local government, Mr Sahib Oladayo.
Speaking on the incident, the ALGON Chairman, Sanda bemoaned embarrassment of and assault on Oladayo by men of the Immigration service.
In what he described as an abuse of uniform by the immigration officials, Sanda demanded the Controller General of Immigration to produce the perpetrator(s) of the attack on the Chairman within 24 hours or face legal action.
In addition, the ALGON boss asked the Comptroller of Immigration to fish out the immigration officer that reportedly launched the attack on the Chairman to tender a letter of apology.
Sanda said: “We want to charge the Comptroller General of Immigration that all the immigration officers across the 33 local government areas should vacate. We no longer need them in our various offices again.
“Also, we want the Controller General of Immigration to produce the perpetrator of the incident within 24 hours or the person will face legal action. It is embarrassing. The Chairman was seriously dealt with yesterday. If the executive chairman, security officer of a local government council can be treated that way, what is the fate of the common man? We are embarrassed and don’t want such to occur again.”
When contacted, Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service, Oyo Command, Mr Olufemi Adetunji promised to get back on an official position.
