A 78-year-old man, Gabriel Adejare, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ibadan Magistrates’ Court sitting in Iwo Road for impersonating an aide of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, and collecting N1.2m to facilitate a chieftaincy title for one Zacheus Oladepo.
The police prosecutor, Sunday Aderemi, said Adejare committed the offence in December 2017 at the Oyo State secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
The charges read, “That you, Gabriel Adejare, sometime in the month of December 2017, at the state secretariat, Ibadan, in the Ibadan Magisterial District, did obtained the sum of N1.2m from one Zacheus Oladepo, under the false pretences of giving him a chieftaincy title of Baale Aladigun of Adigun at the Olubadan palace, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of Criminal Code, Cap 38, Law of Oyo State, 2000.
“That you, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal the sum of N1.2m property of one Zacheus Oladepo.”
Adejare pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
The Chief Magistrate, Taiwo Olaniran, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 and adjourned till September 9, 2018.
