Gambling and growth; the bittersweet Nigerian experience

Gambling in Nigeria has been christened a modern epidemic even as the government and other operators seek a stake of the billion-dollar industry. In a May 2023 survey, the Nigerian betting industry value was placed at US$2b.

This figure may be contested but it came with additional numbers, indicating that about 60 million Nigerians aged 18 to 50 years bet daily. These numbers not only show how deep betting is in the country, but also offer an opportunity to the authorities to control the industry and take the profits from it to fund other government operations. As the money goes into the industry, so does the number of operators rise. As at 2024 it is said there are over 40 licensed betting operators in Nigeria, and even more unlicensed.

We wouldn’t recommend signing up with the unlicensed ones, with the risk of losing out being ever elevated, and that is why Cheekypunter has top reviews of the best sites to bet on, with the expert evaluation of Betway among such reviews.

Improving the Nigerian betting industry is a necessity

The need to improve the Nigerian betting industry comes as a necessity looking at the sheer number of bettors and the monies staked every single day. The major customer-focused change recently seen in the industry has been the effort to ensure ease in depositing funds and withdrawing the same. With this in mind, there has been the introduction of Bitcoin as a verified currency of operation across betting sites. It is a fact that digital currencies have been getting worldwide recognition through the years. The sheer size of the Nigerian betting industry is tipped to benefit from this and the regulatory authorities have picked out just how far such introductions can carry the industry. This transition to digital currencies not only improves convenience but comes with an assurance of security.

Betting popularity merged with growing digital space

The growth in popularity of betting has also been merged with the growing digital spaces. Today, it is easier to find reliable internet to browse, than it was 10 years ago in Nigeria. The betting industry has taken advantage of this, to introduce virtual sports that offer additional convenience.

Esports, for example, is a growing option for bettors, who are also making use of the competitive edge and legitimacy this option has been commanding. If there is an area that expects to have the major expansion in the Nigerian betting space, it has to be Esports, which offers a range of appealing games, targeting youngsters between ages 18 to 30. Esports is just one of the dynamic changes that have come with the expanding digital space.

As it gets popular, the numbers mentioned at the start of this article could well increase by about 25%. Even as the industry makes its gains from the growing populace, the calls for responsible gambling have been unceasing. As industry players raise voices in favor of self-regulation, they’ve also been on the forefront in working with the governing authorities. It is important to note that without regulation, this industry will crumble as fast as it has grown.
