Oyo lawmaker, Hon. Adebayo Babajide representing Ibadan North Constituency 2 has called on the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Nwachuku Enwonwu to check the excesses of officers of the special anti robbery squad, SARS in the State.
Adebayo who is the Chairman House committee on Human Right and Democratic governance raised a matter of urgent public importance during the Tuesday plenary in Ibadan, he alleged that the citizens of the State has frequently lamented the brutalities of SARS officers on innocent people.
He said, “Our people are clamouring either through social media or petitions and other form of media over the excesses of some anti robbery squad (SARS) which violates human rights.
“Our peoples lives and human rights matters, holding to the fact that the primary function of the Police force is to prevent and detect crimes in accordance to constitutional provisions.
“Nigeria is still battling with varied security challenges, in combating criminal activities, the police force established Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS with the intention of preventing and nib in the bud criminality in Nigeria.
“Our police officers especially SARS men need change of attitude and thorough re-orientation especially the way some of them parade themselves with hard-handedness making unlawful arrest of some citizens.”
He added that the State lawmakers will be ready to give every needed support to the Nigerian Police towards ending this societal embarrassment.
