Medical experts have advised employers to create a more supportive and understanding environment for staff living with diabetes, stressing that workplaces must not become an obstacle to proper disease management.
Speaking at an event to mark World Diabetes Day 2025 at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Consultant Endocrinologist, Dr. Arinola Esan, called for empathy, flexible policies, and greater awareness in handling employees with diabetes.
The programme, themed “Diabetes and the Workplace,” was organized by the Diabetes Care Team, UCH Ibadan, in collaboration with the Diabetes Association of Nigeria, UCH Chapter.
It featured free blood glucose screening and health talks focused on promoting early detection and healthy lifestyle awareness.
Dr. Esan noted that diabetes management involves regular medication, routine checkups, and lifestyle adjustments that require understanding from employers.

“Workplaces must not be a hindrance to diabetes management. Employees should feel comfortable informing their supervisors about their condition.
“It should not be strange to ask for permission to take medication or rest when necessary. Employers should also ensure clean toilets and proper sanitation, which are essential for diabetic patients.”
She further urged government and private institutions to provide practical support for affected individuals, noting that the high cost of drugs and monitoring equipment poses serious challenges for many patients.

A diabetic patient, Mr. Afolabi Diya, who has been managing the condition since 2014, shared his experience, emphasizing the importance of discipline and lifestyle changes.
“It’s not always easy, but regular exercise, healthy eating, and medical checkups have helped me stay healthy”, he said.
As part of activities for the awareness campaign, health educators urged Nigerians to check their blood glucose levels regularly, eat balanced meals, stay active, and maintain a healthy weight to prevent diabetes.
Free medical screenings and consultations were conducted at both the Medical Outpatient Clinic and the Staff Clinic of UCH as part of the hospital’s event to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2025.
