Nigeria And The Weight Of Pervasive Hopelessness

Nigeria’s pervasive hopelessness is not born of poverty alone, but of broken promises and exhausted patience. For decades, citizens have watched leaders recycle rhetoric while living conditions worsen—jobs shrink, prices soar, insecurity spreads, and basic services fail. Each unfulfilled pledge chips away at public faith, replacing hope with resignation.
The young feel it most sharply: educated but unemployed, energetic but excluded. When effort no longer guarantees reward, optimism becomes a luxury. Over time, survival replaces aspiration, and cynicism becomes a shield against disappointment.

Yet this hopelessness is not permanent. It is a response to governance failure, not a national destiny. Restore accountability, reward merit, and deliver justice, and hope—long suppressed—will find its way back into Nigeria’s public life.

All is not lost, in spite of the pervading darkness. From the shadows are still some young elements who are imbued with a burning passion and deep love for the voiceless, especially at the grassroots level where the people have been relegated to the backwaters of development and true human living.

Yet this hopelessness is not permanent. It is a response to governance failure, not a national destiny. Restore accountability, reward merit, and deliver justice, and hope—long suppressed—will find its way back into Nigeria’s public life.

From among those genuinely committed to the emancipation of the people is Egbedokun Sodiq Oyeladun, a fresh oasis in the desert — a symbol of rare moment of relief where despair once reigned.

Who is Egbedokun Sodiq Oyeladun?

Egbedokun Sodiq Oyeladun is a young man with an indisputable deep love for the voiceless. Born about 26 years ago, precisely 8 August, 2000, Oyeladun, the married young man is from Oke-Oba Ile Elegun, Eruwa in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Oyeladun is an home-made educated young man, armed with a Higher National Diploma (HND), Mass Communication from the Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa.

Profession

A grassroots man to the core, the young man has been committed to the growth and development of his community. A large-scale cassava farmer, he is into cassava exportation, thus he is an employer of labour, contributing how own quota to the socio-economic development of his community, Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Apart from being a farmer and cassava exporter, Oyeladun has been contributing meaningfully to the uplift of his community and the welfare of his people. For example, he facilitated a POS training programme for the people and residents of Eruwa and Lanlate. 100 people emerged as beneficiaries of the training programme.

Party Affiliation And Political Exposure

A committed member of the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyeladun is from Ward 1, Oke-Oba, Eruwa.

Why The Quest For Political Klieglight?

The young Oyeladun is a gentleman who naturally avoids the murky waters of politics. However, his passion and love for his people has elevated him from a quiet life to the realm of politics.

Eruwa was divided into six wards: Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The wards were further divided into three zones, consisting of Wards 1 and 5; 2 and 6 and 3 and 4. Since the commencement of the current of democratic experiment since 1999, only Zone 1 and 5 has not been represented in the Oyo State House of Assembly. For the purpose of clarity, the current Speaker of the state legislature, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, is from Zone 2 and 6, while Honourable Dimeji Oladapo is from Zone 3 and 4.

Why Is Oyeladun Eyeing The State House Of Assembly?

Apart from the fact that, as stated above, Zone 1 and 5 is yet to produce a lawmaker since the return of democratic rule, more than 26 years ago, Egbedokun Sodiq Oyeladun has been passionate with his conviction that the best way to serve his people is by being a lawmaker. He is of the belief that it would be more beneficial to make or change laws that affect people at the state level, including education, health, infrastructure, taxes, among others.

He is also of the view that by being a lawmaker, he will be in a position to push for developmental projects in his area, including roads, schools and hospitals, as well as push for job opportunities.

Oyeladun also believes that, for anybody nursing a political ambition or growth as a politician, the Legislature is often the stepping stone to higher office as such a lawmaker must have been well groomed in the art of governance.

Among other reasons, Oyeladun is of the conviction that as a compensation for party loyalty or encouragement, the political party often supports and positions their fresh aspirants to run for legislative position.

The prospective lawmaker seeking for the APC ticket also has a passion for public service reform, believing that a change in the system, if necessary, can be effectively effected via the legislative arm of government. In addition, Oyeladun believes that a lawmaker can represent the interests of his/her constituents and give the community a voice in government.

Why The Choice Of APC As His Political Platform?

The choice of a political party as a platform for elective public office is usually driven by a mix of values, strategy, and opportunity. Common reasons include: access to governance. Oyeladun believes that a strong political party with significant influence, such as the APC, would make it easier for the politician to push policies, if elected.

Oyeladun shares same ideology with APC, the biggest political party in Nigeria. The party’s principles, policies, and vision align with what he stands for. He is also of a strong opinion that an aspirant for any elective political office on the platform of a political party like APC stands on a solid ground to get campaign supports, including funding, volunteers, publicity, and endorsements.

It is a known fact that, in the history of politics and elections, one thing stands out namely, taking a stance on political history and/or loyalty. Oyeladun is a budding politician of strong ideological bent. He thus of the view that a long-standing tie and learning the political ropes can easily be realistic via the APC platform.

On his electability, the legislative aspirant opines “APC will give me the best chance of contesting for and winning the election into the Oyo State House of Assembly.

“Talking about popularity and structure, APC is a strong political party with grassroots networks, loyal voters, and experience winning elections —huge advantages. In short, a political party isn’t just a label—it is a vehicle for visibility, legitimacy, and impact. And APC has everything it takes to win an election.”

Oyeladun And His Support Base
Though a very young man, venturing out into politics, Oyeladun is a grassroots and home-based budding politician who has the support of all progressive leaders, both at the ward and local government levels. With all sense of humility, the APC legislative aspirant into the Oyo State House of Assembly has supporters cutting across Eruwa and the length and breadth of Ibarapa East Local Government Area.

“The people at the grassroots level are solidly behind Egbedokun Oyeladun. His desire to contest and win the election into the Oyo State House of Assembly is a collective wish of his constituents in Ibarapa East Local Government Area,” a commentator enthused.
Indeed, Egbedokun Sodiq Oyeladun is a movement. He is the quiet proof that, even in the harshest terrain, renewal is possible. When the fresh oasis appears in the desert, it does more than quench thirst; it restores belief that the journey is not in vain, and that beyond endurance, hope still waits, as presented by Oyeladun, a committed politician seeking to give his constituents a good representative at the Oyo State House of Assembly in 2027.

Prince Saheed Ariwoola writes from Eruwa, Ibarapa East Local Government of Oyo State.
